“Above all things, boy – be a Man…”
Tywin (the elder man) is most definitely an Alpha male.
There is nothing Faux about it.
Here’s why:
1} “Lannisters don’t act like fools. Go on; say something clever.” Tywin understands that words are, all things considered, meaningless. Action, and action alone, is the only way to accomplish anything, to judge or by which to be judged. Speech is simply the movement of air.
2} “Why is he still alive?… Clean?” Alpha males understand that survival is the main goal. And reproduction, the second. Men, such as he, understand that the attainment of power is the best way to survive, prosper and reproduce (women are attracted to power – hence, confidence is always at the top of their list). The means to achieve it is rarely, if ever, punished. Women, in particular, aren’t often interested (and often willingly ignore) how a man got to the top; they care that he is there. What other people think of a Man’s actions is frequently irrelevant since, as stated above, speech is merely moving air and few are willing to dish out punishment/justice. Women care what others think because that is the essence of their value since fickleness is all too common among the majority of them. A solid reputation of kindness, loyalty and fidelity are great boons to women as they give Men a look at how qualified they are to be good mothers and not cuckold the Man in their lives.
3} “A Lannister always pays his debts.” This should be understood as to imply debts of both coin and blood. Men know that their reliability is paramount to all, male and female alike, in their lives. Friends should know a Man has their back and enemies should know a Man has their number.
4} Respect is not opinion but fact. This is difficult for many to grasp. One can be loved or hated and still respected. In fact, what healthy women would call “love” is not at all what most would believe. It is respect – hence, hypergamy (the constantly trading up). This is why, when a woman says “You’re such a jerk, I don’t know why I love you.”, it seems paradoxical. This also why Remarque says in All Quiet On The Western Front that battle brings men closer together than if they were lovers.
5} Men know, to their very depths, that they will die. Moreso than most, since so many want what they have and will kill/hobble/harm them to get it. They also know they are not women; precious few will come to their aid in times of trouble. More importantly, they are expected to handle things on their own. Men understand that only their surname lives on. This is why higher quality Men are so choosy in their mating. “Love” is great – but it is by no means a guarantee. A Man’s legacy is, really, all he has.
6} Notice that Tywin is skinning his own dinner. A Man has no fear of bloodying his hands. He never – never – asks another to do what he, himself, would not do.
7} Notice that Tywin rarely looks at his son when he speaks yet his son does not take his eyes off of his father. An Alpha knows and feels that eyes will be upon him when he speaks. He has no need to be validated in this.
8} Tywin admits his son, Tyrion, is a prisoner and a disappointment. But Tyrion is still his son. A Man protects his lineage – regardless of its apparent worth.
9} Tywin emphasizes the value of youth. Alpha Men know how precious a gift it is and are self-aware, self-critical enough, to realize that they have regrets and wish they did things differently, now and then. They admit to their failings and hold themselves accountable, although they do not permit others to judge them.
10} Tywin emphasizes the treasure that is “the now”. Men know that an imperfect action now is better than stalling in hopes of a perfect action later since, all too rarely, is there a another chance.
My only complaint about the speech Tywin gives is that it should have been made when his son was approximately 8-years-old.
And once more a few a years later.

What a hugely insightful comment. You’ve summed up the entire reason women go for men that are bad for them in a single statement.
Number 10 resonates with me massively. My perfectionism cripples me at times.

Thanks.
Though it’s also why my blog will never be very popular.
People seem to need long posts in order to grasp concepts.
As if more words = greater wisdom.

As much as I despise Tywin , I must admit he is Alpha as fuck. I read The Song of Ice and Fire as soon as the first book came out, and I have read every book as they came out.
Martin is one of the best Authors on earth. I have read few novels better than his. It amazes me that he is normally a science fiction author.
Have you read his stuff or just watched the series?

Just watch the series.
I’ll read them when he completes the series.
I’m in no rush.

You’re welcome.
Why did you need this, may I ask?

Tywin Lannister: [to Jaime] You’re blessed with abilities that few men possess. You’re blessed to belong to one of the most powerful families in the kingdoms, and you’re still blessed with youth. What have you done with these blessings, eh? You served as a glorified bodyguard for two kings – one a mad man, the other a drunk.
[at the Lannisters’ army camp, Jaime enters the tent where his father is. Tywin is busy sharpening a knife, his back turns to his son. A carcass of dead stag is on the table. Jaime reads aloud the royal decree which declares Gregor Clegane as an outlaw]
Jaime Lannister: Poor Ned Stark. Brave man, terrible judgement.
Tywin Lannister: Attacking him was stupid.
[Tywin starts butchering the stag]
Tywin Lannister: Lannisters don’t act like fools.
[Tywin pulls out the entrails of the stag and dumps them into a bucket. Jaime opens his mouth, but Tywin interrupts before his son can speak]
Tywin Lannister: [wipes his hands] You’re gonna to say something clever? Go on, say something clever.
Jaime Lannister: Catelyn Stark took my brother.
Tywin Lannister: [continues butchering the stag] Why is he still alive?
Jaime Lannister: Tyrion?
Tywin Lannister: Ned Stark.
Jaime Lannister: One of our men interfered, speared him through the leg before I could finish him.
Tywin Lannister: Why is he still alive?
Jaime Lannister: It wouldn’t have been clean.
Tywin Lannister: [sneers] Clean? You spend too much time worrying what other people think of you.
Jaime Lannister: I could care less what anyone thinks of me.
Tywin Lannister: That’s what you want people to think of you.
Jaime Lannister: It’s the truth.
Tywin Lannister: And you hear them whispering “Kingslayer” behind your back, doesn’t it bother you?
Jaime Lannister: [reluctantly] Of course it bothers me.
Tywin Lannister: A lion doesn’t concern himself with the opinion of a sheep.
[Jaime does not answer. Tywin continues slaughtering the stag]
Tywin Lannister: I suppose I should be grateful that your vanity got in the way of your recklessness. I’m giving you half of our forces. 30,000 men. And we’ll bring that to Catelyn Stark’s girlhood home, and remind her that Lannisters pay their debts.
Jaime Lannister: [slightly surprised] I didn’t realize you place such a high value on my brother’s life.
Tywin Lannister: [snickers] He’s a Lannister! Maybe the lowest of the Lannisters, but he’s one of us. And everyday that he remains a prisoner, the less our name commands respect.
Jaime Lannister: So the lion does concern himself with the opinion…
Tywin Lannister: [interrupts Jaime impatiently] No, that’s not an opinion, it’s a fact! If another house can seize one of our own and hold him captive with impunity, we are no longer a house to be feared.
[Jaime nods silently. Tywin continues carving the stag]
Tywin Lannister: Your mother’s dead. Before long I’ll be dead, and you and your brother and your sister and all of her children, all of us dead, all of us rotting underground. It’s the family name that lives on. It’s all that lives on. Not your personal glory, not your honor… but family. You understand?
[Jaime nods quietly. Tywin thrusts the knife at the table and wipes his hands clean with a cloth]
Tywin Lannister: You’re blessed with abilities that few men possess. You’re blessed to belong to the most powerful family in the kingdoms. And you’re still blessed with youth. And what have you done with these blessings, eh? You served as a glorified bodyguard for two kings… one a mad man, the other a drunk.
[Tywin approaches Jaime]
Tywin Lannister: The future of our family will be determined in these next few months. We could establish a dynasty that would last a thousand years… or we could collapse into nothing, as the Targaryens did.
[Tywin places his palm on Jaime’s right cheek and looks at his closely in the eyes]
Tywin Lannister: I need you to become a man you’re always meant to be. Not next year, not tomorrow… now.
[Tywin turns away from his son, picks up the knife and continues butchering the stag. Jaime lingers, then leaves. Tywin looks after him]
Tywin Lannister: It’s the family name that lives on. That’s all that lives on. Not your personal glory, not your honor, but family.

Haha No, it was taken from IMBD. I just Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V’ed it here because it’s a great conversation. Translation to come.

“Men know that an imperfect action now is better than stalling in hopes of a perfect action later since, all too rarely, is there a another chance.”
I’ve heard this before…from General Patton.
“A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.”

All I can say is:
Great minds think alike.
And there is nothing new under the sun.
