“There’s no way out, but if you dare, make a deal and grow your hair…”
He tells me:
“You should cut your hair.
You look better with it short.”
I reply, unemotionally:
No, I don’t look “better with it short”.
I look “useful with it short”.
See, short hair can’t get caught in machinery or a ship’s rigging.
It can’t get grabbed in a fight.
It can’t get in my eyes during a hunt.
The list goes onward.
Now, they say long hair “looks better on women”.
This is correct since it’s indicative of health.
But wouldn’t that also be True for men?
Of course it would be – and is.
Why it looks better on women is because they aren’t expected to be useful beyond their health [read: reproduction].
In fact, regardless of protestations, most women lust after men with long hair.
Why?
Because men with long hair are sub-communicating to women:
“Not only do I flout social convention, I am useful in ways you can’t readily determine.”
Which naturally fuels a woman’s curiosity and, subsequently, her desire.
However, it would be mistaken to believe long hair on a man is a magic pill, of some sort.
Remember, a woman reads dozens (if not hundreds) of other, even more subtle, details of potential mates.
So, if nothing else at all is readily apparent to attract her, this indication of a lack of usefulness will only hurt a man.
But if a few other positive details can be discerned by the woman in question:
It’s a tremendous push in his favor.

Reminds me of the saying in Fight Club…
“Fight Club is the reason why you kept your hair short and your nails trimmed.”
It is all about your usefulness…which in this world is all you have.
However…look at my avatar.
While I like keep my hair that short on top…I’m growing the bottom part out. Beard hair has the same effects. You do need some mystery.
January 23, 2014 at 7:06 am
Earl,
Correct.
And why is “usefulness all you have”?
I’ve covered this before.
All of my work builds upon itself, like a staircase to Truth.
Shall I answer for you or will you guess?

Yep, that article at RoK blew up yesterday. The jackals came out to play – with the standard “you can’t tell me what to do” responses. The problem being, unless a woman has some type of problem with her hair (I dated one that called her long hair a Jew Fro because it was so frizzy and tangled), most women on the prowl will go start doing two things…
1) Working out – so look better
2) Grow out their hair
There are any married guys out there right now, with a wife that is doing BOTH of those things and you didn’t prompt it or ask for it, then it might be time for an intervention (just saying). BTW, that comes from personal observation and experience.
January 23, 2014 at 3:26 pm
Tin man,
That whole RoK thing has me laughing.
As usual, everyone is arguing.
Yet none of them know what they’re really saying.
Men are stating women don’t need to be useful beyond being hot and feminine.
Women are demanding they be valued for being “useful’ (as men are).
And neither get it because they’re both staying in shallow water/operating with superficialitities, whether they realize it or not.
As much as I love the ‘sphere, so many guys still have a long way to go.
Sadly, many of them are “big wigs”, too.
C’est la guerre.

Tin Man,
“There are any married guys out there right now, with a wife that is doing BOTH of those things and you didn’t prompt it or ask for it, then it might be time for an intervention (just saying). BTW, that comes from personal observation and experience.”
Agreed 100%.
Seen it; been there.
[Not a wife, rather gf, but overall – the same situation/observation.]

Well, Ace, I am now in a position to grow out my hair for the first time in years. I will see what the results are, as I will also be attending college. Plenty of subjects for observation. I will let you know what I see.

TSK,
Great!
Go for it.
Although, two things:
1} Read my grooming post from a while back.
2} Your hair will look shitty for quite a while as it comes in. Don’t let anyone talk you out of continuing [I made that mistake, many, many times].
Best of luck to you!
January 23, 2014 at 5:42 pm
I have grown it out before, despite the naysayers. I have spent the last five years cutting it to another’s satisfaction, and my beard as well. Now, it is all mine. I will do as I will. The goal is not to cut it before I graduate, and not to shave, either, except to trim it and care for it.
Care to post a link? I do not think I am familiar with that one.

Interesting. To me there’s something more ‘manly’ about short hair on a gent. Combine it with a beard and it’s a winning combination.
I’ve always thought longer hair on men was for hippies, rock stars, Latin Americans, and gigolos.
As men age, long hair looks terribly unhealthy. It becomes sparse, dry, and frizzy.
What’s your position on ,sideburns?
January 23, 2014 at 3:18 pm
LBF,
First, thanks for dropping in; I don’t recall seeing you here, before.
Now, to address your points:
Please read the post again [respectful request].
You’ve actually supported every point I made, as I’ll show you below.
1} Of course you think it’s “more masculine”. You’ve been programmed that way. Read ‘The Manipulated Man’ by Esther Vilar and you’ll understand fully.
Masculine = Useful (By “useful” I mean “of use to women”)
So you support my point.
2} All the people you “thought long hair was for” get laid way more than the average guy.
Again, you support my point.
3} Long hair looks worse as it ages on anyone. Why do you think wise women cut it short only when they’re older? Why do you think there are 1,000’s of products for women to care for hair?
Thricely, now, you support my point.
I’ve seen you around other places [Dalrock, LaidNYC, etc] but here is different.
I hope you hang around to discover, and enjoy, just why that is.
Best wishes to you and yours.
January 23, 2014 at 4:08 pm
I did read it, and it made me think about this topic a bit more. I don’t deny you make some good points.
My aesthetic preference is for short hair. I think longer hair on men–particularly grown men–looks silly, immature, and feminine. But I don’t doubt a lot of modern girls like silly and immature. And perhaps there are girls who like long-haired guys because it’s more feminine, and thus less threateningly masculine?
Men with longer hair (or prettier faces), it could be argued, rely more on “being”–which is feminine–rather than on “doing”, which is masculine.
Check out this article on bald men [I’m not bald, or balding], which cites a study showing evidence that bald men are perceived as more manly, dominant:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2211097/Want-look-manly-Shave-head-study-reveals-bald-men-seen-dominant.html
The study also shows that longer hair is perceived as more attractive. So maybe the debate can be distilled into this:
More manly/dominant vs. more attractive.
I wonder how Krauser, who is mostly bald, stacks up with long-locked pretty boys who don’t know Game? I seem to recall there were a few other bald or balding PUAs out there.
Good site, btw.

LBF,
Sideburns should be part of something larger (beard) or gone.
They’re not enough to make a good statement.
Instead, they are just enough to make things worse without possessing the ability to improve a man’s look.
January 23, 2014 at 4:09 pm
Exactly. Well said, A.

Mostly off topic (at least it’s about hair) — but I’m a sucker for woman that pull their long hair through the back of a baseball cap – pony-tail style. I can think of at least three of my long term relationships (one being my x-wife) that did that.
BTW, talking utility … there have been lots of men that braided their hair so they could work (or fight) because they wore their hair long. And in some cultures, having your “braid” cut off was one of the official acts of disgrace or disbarment from the group.

Tin Man,
“I’m a sucker for woman that pull their long hair through the back of a baseball cap – pony-tail style.”
Heh, yeah. Me, too.
“BTW, talking utility … there have been lots of men that braided their hair so they could work (or fight) because they wore their hair long. And in some cultures, having your “braid” cut off was one of the official acts of disgrace or disbarment from the group.”
So glad you said that.
I’m a firm believer in natural, inborn gender differences but “long hair on men is feminine” is certainly a cultural meme.
Only when men were relegated to “worker bee” status, did that become a norm.
As I said to LBF, read ‘The Manipulated Man’ by Esther Vilar.
If you need a copy, email me.

Seen a picture of the old Vikingr? Men they were, with long hair and beards aplenty. Anyone calling their manhood into question would be lucky to be enthralled. More likely, rather than taking them as a thrall, they would have been killed. Unless it was a pretty woman. They were real fond of taking them home. Iceland is half Irish by blood, and red hair can be found wherever the Vikingr held sway.

1) tempesttcup has blogged about how drinking bone broth has improved the quality of her hair. I’m sure for any man wanting to grow his out, this would be a sensible course to follow.
2) When I met my husband, he had long hair. He cut it off when he decided he didn’t want to try supporting a family on a theatrical electrician’s income. He’s in software now, and could probably grow it out again given the appearance requirements aren’t as stringent as finance, but he’s grown used to the easier maintenance of short hair. That and a not unreasonable concern that the effect would be more Comic Store Guy than Metal these days.
3) Interesting points on utility. I suppose women want to be valued as useful because a) we were made to be helpers and b) it’s irritating to be complimented on and valued for things outside your control. Would you rather be praised for your talent, or for the work you put into cultivating it?

A lot of older cultures had men with longer hair. Having a long beard (and presumably longer hair) was considered a Russian tradition until Peter the Great stamped it out in an attempt to “modernize” Russia.
Native Americans prided themselves on long hair. Japanese Samurai had long hair, etc, etc.
Also – long hair looks good if you take care of it (read: don’t nuke it with modern shampoo and conditioner).
I think I look better with hair on the long side (and girls prefer it that way ) though I’ve never experimented with truly long hair.
